St. Joe Valley Metronet Incorporated Five years of planning, led by Project Future and the St. Joseph County Chamber, culminate in creation of St. Joe Valley Metronet. The goal is to build a vendor neutral, dark fiber broadband network to foster economic development in the emerging technology-driven economy.

Access to South Bend Conduit A reciprocal agreement lets Metronet run fiber through city-owned conduit. In exchange, the city receives free use of dedicated fiber.

Capital Contributors Commit Capital Contributors commit to prepay 10 years of subscription fees to fund buildout of the fiber network. They included: Teachers Credit Union; University of Notre Dame; South Bend Medical Foundation; Memorial Health System; Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center; Madison Center; Robert Bosch Corp.

Initial Fiber Backbone Installed Installation is completed of almost 50 miles of fiber optic cable. The redundant ring design will be the backbone of the dark fiber network reaching the main business, education, medical and government centers of South Bend.

Capital Contributors Connected: Less than a year after solidifying their commitments to creating Metronet, the capital contributors start benefiting from the dark fiber network.

Grand Opening Celebration Century Center is the site for a community reception where benefits of Metronet's high speed, high capacity dark fiber network are explained.

St. Joseph County Agreement Reciprocal agreement with St. Joseph County grants Metronet access to county-owned conduit and gives the county exclusive use of dedicated pairs of fiber.

National Recognition Broadband Properties presents its national Cornerstone Award to St. Joe Valley Metronet recognizing the achievement of developing unique public-private partnership and building a dark fiber network to support economic development and innovation.

First Carrier Connects Carriers recognize the value and reliability of Metronet by using Metronet to connect their clients rather than installing their own fiber. The first such carrier, I-Light, Indiana's high-speed research and education network, uses Metronet to reach Indiana University South Bend.

Mishawaka Agreement Signing of a reciprocal agreement with the City of Mishawaka gives the city exclusive use of dedicated pairs of fiber while Metronet receives access to city-owned conduit through which to run network fiber.

Mishawaka Expansion Construction began in spring of 2008 and the first phase was finished a few months later. The second phase, finished toward the end of 2008, completed the Mishawaka loop to help provide resiliency in the network.

Second Carrier Subscribes Cogent is the second carrier to use Metronet fiber to serve its subscribers

A Cool Idea Use of Metronet fiber allows Notre Dame to locate servers in the City of South Bend greenhouse at Potawatomi Park. Heat from the servers is recycled into the greenhouse and the university saves cooling costs.
